On August 26, Susanna Mälkki will conduct the Sibelius Academy orchestra at Helsinki’s Musiikkitalo.
The evening opens with Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, rich in the colourful imagery of French impressionism, followed by Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7; an architectural masterpiece, written in a single movement, in which the music builds toward the trombone theme and an uplifting conclusion. The concert culminates with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. From the deep melancholy of the second movement, the music moves into the wild whirlwind of the finale.
This program will be repeated on August 28 at the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy in Tallinn.
