On July 3, Susanna Mälkki conducts Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Bavarian State Opera as part of this year’s Munich Opera Festival. She returns to the festival later in the month to lead performances of Fauré’s rarely-heard opera, Pénélope.

Directed by Evgeny Titov, this lively production, which Mälkki conducted earlier this year for the company, brings out the playful humor at the heart of Mozart’s classic opera. Titov highlights the amusing and absurd interactions between the characters, infusing the stage with fresh, youthful energy, complemented by Annmarie Woods’ vibrant set design and D. M. Wood’s dynamic lighting.

Mälkki leads an all-star cast featuring Davide Luciano as the Count, Maria Bengtsson as the Countess, Julie Fuchs as Susanna, Philippe Sly as Figaro, Emily D’Angelo as Cherubino, Dorothea Röschmann as Marcellina, and Willard White as Bartolo.
