On January 15, Susanna Mälkki conducts the phenomenal trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in a program featuring the Finnish premiere of Betsey Jolas’ new work Onze Lieder, plus works by Steve Reich and Sibelius. There will be a live broadcast of the concert via Yle on Friday, January 15th at 7 pm CET.

In 2018, Mälkki conducted the LA Phil in the world premiere of Reich’s latest orchestral work: Music for ensemble and orchestra. Of the premiere, Thomas May wrote, “…with Susanna Mälkki on the podium, the entire concert on November 2 made the concept of a modern symphony orchestra itself feel vitally relevant. Juxtaposed against pleasures of Reich’s exquisitely crafted piece, a familiar Mahler symphony—the Fifth—was transformed into a revelatory experience” (Musical America). Concluding the program is Sibelius’ Suite from King Christian II. Completed a year before his First Symphony, this work made Sibelius internationally known as an orchestral composer and paved the way for his symphonic career.
