On October 5, Susanna Mälkki returns to Royal Festival Hall to conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that features two Sibelius masterpieces – his warmest tone-poem, The Oceanides, and his gentlest Symphony No. 6. Completing the program is Britten’s youthful Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year, performs Elgar’s much-loved Cello Concerto.
Part of the LPO’s “Isle of Noises” concert series, for nine decades the orchestra has been at the heart of music-making in London, in the British Isles and Europe. Throughout 2019 the LPO explores three centuries of music in these islands, whether made in the British Isles, or inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the audiences that composers of all nations found there including Purcell, Haydn, and Handel.
