On September 18, Susanna Mälkki leads the Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker, for the first time at the Musikfest Berlin. From August 30 to September 19, the Musikfest Berlin will present 26 events with over 65 works by around 25 composers in the Philharmonie, its chamber music hall and the Konzerthaus Berlin with 22 instrumental and vocal ensembles and over 50 soloists from the international musical life.

The concert will begin with Olga Neuwirth’s Aelloballet mécanomorphe, a flute concerto featuring Emmanuel Pahud. The piece is a response to Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, replacing Bach’s harpsichord with a synthesizer and rendering what Bach cryptically described as “flauti d’echo” as a pair of muted trumpets. Completing the program is Gérard Grisey’s sumptuous Quatre chants por Franchir le Seuil (Four Songs for Crossing the Threshold) featuring soprano Juliet Frasher.
