This month, due to Mariss Jansons’ cancellation, Susanna Mälkki is picking up the baton for several concerts to conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Riga Jurmala Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

For the Riga Jurmala Music Festival, Susanna conducts two sold-out performances on July 19 and July 21 at the Latvian National Opera. On July 19, the program includes Sibelius’ First Symphony, one of the composer’s most romantic symphonies, with soaring melodies that nod to Tchaikovsky. Julian Rachlin interprets Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, written by the composer during his nomadic concert-tour-life, and concluding the concert is Strauss’ colorful Der Rosenkavalier Suite. On July 21, Rudolf Buchbinder interprets Brahms’ dramatic and tender Piano Concerto No. 2. Ms. Mälkki ends the program leading one of Beethoven’s most energetic and cheerful works, the Symphony No. 2. Learn more about the Riga Jurmala Festival here.

On July 27, at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Susanna makes her debut at the festival conducting a purely symphonic program of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4. The final performance takes place on July 28, at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. The program includes Sibelius’ First Symphony, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring Julian Rachlin, and concludes with Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite.
