This November and December, Susanna Mälkki makes her Gran Teatre del Liceu debut where she will conduct Il trittico, a set of three celebrated one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini.  The masterpiece will be performed in its entirety at this famed Barcelona theater for the first time in thirty-five years.

Lotte de Beer’s acclaimed production, which premiered at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2017, links the three different stories together through the use of a singular set and an emphasis on their common theme of death.

The first opera in the triptych is Il tabarro which will star Ambrogio Maestri as Michele, Brandon Jovanovich as Luigi, Pablo García-López as Il Tinca, Valeriano Lanchas as Il Tapa, Lise Davidsen as Giorgetta, and Mireia Pintó as Frugola.

The tragic Suor Angelica will be led by Ermonela Jaho in the title role, with Daniela Barcellona as The Princess, María Luisa Corbacho as The Abbess, Marta Infante as Mistress of the Novices, Mercedes Gancedo as Suor Genovieffa, Carolina Fajardo as Suor Osmina and Berna Perles as Suor Dolcina.

Puccini’s comedy, Gianni Schicchi, concludes the collection of operas and will star Ambrogio Maestri as the titular character, Ruth Iniesta as Lauretta, Daniela Barcellona as Zita, Iván Ayón-Rivas as Rinuccio, Marc Sala as Gherardo, Berna Perles as Nella, Pau Armengol as Betto, Stefano Palatchi as Simone, David Oller as Marco and Mireia Pintó as La Ciesca.

Performances will take place on November 27, 29, December 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15.
