Susanna Mälkki begins the 2021/22 season with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and two legendary soloists from the United States: Esperanza Spalding and Claire Chase. This exciting concert on September 10 will feature the highly anticipated world premiere of Felipe Lara’s Double Concerto, which was commissioned jointly by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as Dvořák’s vibrant and rhythmic Slavonic Dances.
American jazz bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding is a four-time Grammy Award-winner. She received her latest award in 2020 for Best Jazz Vocal Album for 12 Little Spells. Flutist, collaborative artist, and advocate for new and experimental music, Claire Chase was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2012 and began “Density 2036” in 2014, a 22-year project to commission a significant body of new music for the flute, culminating in the one-hundredth anniversary of Edgard Varèse’s “Density 21.5” of 1936. These superstar artists are sure to offer an evening overflowing with stage charisma and thrilling music-making.
