This winter, Susanna Mälkki makes her greatly anticipated debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, conducting a month-long performance run of Kaija Saariaho’s “transfixing” (The New York Times) opera L’Amour de Loin. The production, new to The Metropolitan Opera stage, is directed by Robert Lepage, and stars soprano Susanna Phillips as Clémence, bass-baritone Eric Owens as Jaufré Rudel, and mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford as The Pilgrim.
Ms. Mälkki’s debut with this new production has been heralded as a highlight of the New York City performing arts season, with features in the Wall Street Journal (“Susanna Mälkki, Center Stage“) and The New York Times (“With Women in Command, the Met Opera Addresses a Gender Gap” & “Met to Stage Its First Opera by a Woman Since 1903“).
The performances take place December 1, 6, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24 & 29 – please note the December 1 performance will receive a LIVE radio broadcast via Met Opera Radio (over the air & online). On December 10 the opera will be transmitted into movie theaters across the globe, as part of the Met’s Live in HD cinema series.
