Susanna Mälkki leads the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in two festival performances this month, beginning with a richly programmed performance as part of the Helsinki Festival on August 18. The evening includes Stravinsky’s Funeral Song, the Finnish premiere of excerpts from Shostakovich’s The Nose, and Mahler’s sweeping Das Lied von der Erde with soloists Gerhild Romberger and Burkhard Fritz. Helsinki’s Music Centre – Concert Hall hosts this not-to-be-missed performance.

On August 22, Ms. Mälkki and the HPO perform at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm’s Berwaldhallen, in celebration of Finland’s 100th Anniversary of Independence. The ensemble performs Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7, and will reprise Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Ms. Romberger and tenor soloist Simon O’Neill.
